THE RELIANT PARK COMPLEX-THE LARGEST NATURAL DISASTER SHELTER IN UNITED STATES HISTORY FOR HURRICANE KATRINA • At 3 AM, Harris County Judge Eckels received a call from the governor's office. • Immediately the Judge goes to the home of Shea Guinn, President and General Manager of SMG-Reliant Park to discuss sheltering evacuees in Reliant Astrodome. • SMG-Reliant Park became a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated American Red Cross shelter from Aug. 31, 2005 to Sept. 20, 2005. • The first bus carrying evacuees arrived at Reliant Astrodome in less than 24 hours of the call where cots, blankets, bathroom and showering facilities, food, and toiletries were already in place. • The 350 acre property housed over 27,000 evacuees. • A base pool of about 200 employees and recruited staff from sister facilities in other cities-stadiums and arenas in Oakland, CA, Chicago, IL and Jacksonville, FL aided in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at...

2006 Essence Music Festival Statement

As ESSENCE continues to work closely with city and state officials to rebuild the city of New Orleans, The 2006 Essence Music Festival will be temporarily relocated to Houston, Texas. Plans are underway for the annual event, which will be held on July 1, 2, and 3, 2006 at Reliant Park. A component of the 2006 Festival will be devoted to helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina. More details will be announced in the weeks ahead, and tickets will go on sale December 1.

EV1.NET HOUSTON BOWL ADDS CONFERENCE USA TO ITS 2006-2009 MATCH-UP

HOUSTON, TX – The EV1.net Houston Bowl recently signed an agreement with Conference USA to participate in the EV1.net Houston Bowl in one of the 2006 through 2009 seasons in the place of a Big East Conference participant. The agreement also offers Conference USA the opportunity for a team to participate in the Bowl in the event the Big 12 Conference is unable to provide a team for the game.

“The EV1.net Houston Bowl is looking forward to adding Conference USA into our partnership with the Big 12 Conference and the Big East Conference,” said Shea Guinn, Chairman of the Board for the Houston Bowl Foundation. “This allows us the opportunity to benefit from C-USA’s teams Texas alignment and to be guaranteed that quality teams will be participating in our game every year. This is just another example of the commitment of the Houston Bowl Foundation to make this game into an exciting annual Houston event.”
